tv

Abstract

Like them or hate them, television advertisements with popular music are a major part of the commercial landscape. Understanding the selection and execution can provide the basis and foundation for the inevitable art versus commerce dialogue. The following article discusses the what and the how of popular music and television advertising. From how many to how used, this paper prepares the reader for the bankruptcy of culture or marriage of art and commerce debate. It includes a timeline and interview from probably the most ardent supporter of the technique – Coca-Cola. Once finished, this article will help the reader support either position concerning the use of popular music in television commercials.

This article will be presented at the 2011 Mid-Atlantic Popular and American Culture Association (MAPACA) Conference, Thursday, November 3-5 at the Radisson Warwick Hotel in Philadelphia, PA
